Rocky Bay Store Variety Show Aug 2011
Watch the Rocky Bay Store Variety Show that was held on 20 August 2011.
It was held to raise funds to save the Rocky Bay Store.
Thanks to Sue Millinchip for the footage.
This was directed by Nansi Thompson. In her own words in an email to Julienne (Zeenat) at the Gulf News:
“The Rocky Bay Store Variety Show was created to refresh commitment to the idea of a community store, and to have some community fun. Shy at first, soon the locals were coming out and pulling their friends in to join them. We have been holding weekly rehearsals for people to get their acts together for the night. There is a lineup of local and exotic starts ready to perform, including poets, dancers, hula, singers, burlesque, and musicians”. As people arrive they will be greeted by fire dancers and drummers celebrating the new spark of hope and creativity that is rising. They will then be ushered into the small but perfectly formed Rocky Bay Hall to settle in for a night of entertainment”.
The small human measure of the Rocky Bay Hall, is the perfect setting for a retro vaudeville happening like this. It keeps us humble, yet at the same time, it’s almost like a musical jewelry box where you lift the lid, and all sorts of wondrous things spiral round.
The spirit of the show is the transformative power of fire, and that from the disaster that was the burning of our store, a new spark of hope and creativity has arisen”.
